On this account it is much the same as a classic game of poker, without the interaction with competing players. Of course, methods employed during a real-life game of poker, such as tricking, will be useless here.

The game of Electronic Poker begins when the enthusiast inserts credits (whether it is tokens, credit slips or money) into the machine and presses the deal button. A 5 card hand will then be "dealt" on the screen.

The Electronic Poker game also has hold buttons, and bettors should now pick which cards to keep and which to throw away. For the cards the enthusiast would like to retain, the ‘hold’ buttons should be pressed so that they light up. The player can choose to keep any number of cards they wish, from all to none.

After the player has decided on which cards she wishes to keep, the player will then press ‘draw’, at which point any new cards will be given out if desired. The game is now completed, with the Video Poker machine analyzing the cards to see if it matches any of the winning hands listed in the pay out schedule.

Generally, the lowest succeeding hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money growing for each better hand. A common list of winning hands begins with jacks or better, moving on to 2 pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and finally royal flushes. It should be known that the payout schedule can range from machine to machine, so that skillful players are agile enough to select the most beneficial machine each and every instance.

As soon as the first round has completed, the player can either decide to continue on and try to to maximize their earnings, or they can press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any money that might have been won. Further, a few versions of the game give the player a chance to double their profits, in which case a further round is played. There are also differences among specific machines, with some decks of cards having wild cards and other differing aspects to enhance playability.
